A Chilean dance record can generate club play and streaming income, but the two uses do not leave the same accounting trail. The Sociedad Chilena de Autores e Intérpretes Musicales (SCD) says it allocates discotheque author royalties from a statistical sample of more than 20 clubs, collected twice a year. It processes digital author rights from services including Spotify, YouTube and TikTok quarterly. For a producer or label, those are different claims to prepare, and different statements to audit.
Club rotation is measured by a sample
On its distribution guide, SCD says the club sample covers venues in the Santiago metropolitan region and other regions. The society does not say that every club submits a track-by-track log, or that one documented spin automatically generates an individual payment. Treat the sample as an allocation method for the licensed pool, not as a census of every dancefloor.
That distinction matters when a track is big with DJs but modest on digital services. A label cannot infer club royalties by multiplying Spotify plays by an assumed venue rate. It should instead keep its own dated evidence: DJ reports, venue and city, track version, and any licensed public-use reporting available. Those records help frame a query to SCD, even though they do not replace the society’s published sampling method.
SCD describes a different process for radio: BMAT’s Vericast recognition system monitors 400 stations and assigns radio rights to detected works. Its live-concert pool is allocated event by event across reported performances after administrative costs. A play in a club, a radio broadcast and a concert therefore belong in separate reconciliation columns, even if the same master is used in all three places.
Streaming depends on the registered work
SCD says its digital author-rights distributions run through quarterly processes that depend on registered works and their authorship percentages. That is a composition claim. A distributor’s master-streaming statement addresses the recording side of the use; it does not by itself establish the songwriter split in SCD’s records. When the two statements differ, first compare the right and accounting period before calling either one missing money.
The practical pre-release check is a song-by-song split sheet signed by every writer, followed by a matching work declaration. SCD’s rights declaration page separately lists a work declaration, a performer participation declaration and a master ownership form. One upload to a distributor does not fill out all three. Keep the title, writer names, split percentages and recording metadata consistent across the files you control.
For a new SCD author applicant, the society’s membership instructions require a declared work and say that each additional song gets its own form. They also request an MP3 and the melody score, with lyrics supplied separately when present. That is an operational hurdle worth planning for before a catalogue has hundreds of tracks, rather than discovering it when a statement needs correcting.
Build a rights ledger by use
Give every recording one row for its master owner and performers, and every song another for its writers and publishers. Add columns for SCD registration status, split confirmation, DSP delivery, radio use, club evidence and live setlists. Mark quarterly digital periods separately from the twice-yearly club sample. The value is not a promise that every use will pay; it is a way to identify which right, evidence source or filing is absent.
This is also why our earlier look at Chile’s streaming collection and performer line should not be read as a master payout rate. Different right types sit behind those numbers. Brazil’s shop-music sample and play-report system shows the same general lesson across the border: a collection method determines what usage evidence can reach a royalty statement.
For a Chilean label using InterSpace Distribution, the immediate decision is to reconcile the platform’s recording reports with a separate SCD work and neighbouring-rights register. Good delivery data makes a master trackable; correct declarations make its other rights payable to the right people. Put both in the release checklist, then ask a precise question when one line fails to appear.
