Fatoumata Diawara Returns with Single ‘Djanne’ from Forthcoming Album Massa

Fatoumata Diawara has released ‘Djanne’, a new single that pairs a buoyant, retro groove with lyrics addressing drought and upheaval in northern Mali during the 1970s and 1980s.

Fatoumata Diawara, the Grammy-nominated Malian singer-songwriter and guitarist, released a new single, ‘Djanne’, on 27 February 2026. The track is the first preview of her forthcoming album, Massa.

Built around a tight funk guitar loop, lively bass and crisp rhythmic movement, the song carries a pronounced retro feel. Its buoyant, danceable arrangement masks a more sombre subject: the lyrics reflect on drought, displacement and the upheaval experienced in northern Mali during the 1970s and 1980s.

At two minutes and 42 seconds, ‘Djanne’ is brief. The contrast between its bright musical palette and the weight of its historical themes creates a layered listening experience.
