Investment firm CVC Capital Partners has agreed to acquire a majority stake in independent music distributor DistroKid, with existing backer Insight Partners retaining a significant minority holding. The transaction is expected to close by the end of September. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Deal Structure and Leadership
DistroKid president Phil Bauer will remain in his role. CVC partner Sebastian Künne said the firm had been impressed by the company’s trajectory.
“We’ve been incredibly impressed by what Phil and the entire DistroKid team have built,” Künne said. “We look forward to partnering with Phil and his team, drawing on our experience across music, entertainment and consumer subscription businesses to help DistroKid support the next generation of artists around the world.”
DistroKid’s Market Footprint
In 2021, DistroKid reported that it was used by more than two million artists and distributed between 30% and 40% of all new music globally. More recent data from AI-charts firm SIQA indicated that 75.8% of submissions to its rankings used DistroKid as their distributor. Examples of AI-generated projects distributed through the platform include The Velvet Sundown and Indian avatar-artists Aishan and Ruh.
AI and Content Policies
DistroKid has participated in industry initiatives addressing AI-generated music, serving as a launch partner for Spotify’s AI transparency credits system. The company’s rules bar impersonation of human artists’ voices, likenesses and identities, as well as “mass-generated spam.”
Industry Positioning
The deal reinforces DistroKid’s position outside the major label system. While the valuation was not confirmed, earlier reports had suggested a figure of up to $2 billion, which would be more than 2.5 times the $775 million acquisition of Downtown Music by Universal Music Group. CVC’s music portfolio already includes live entertainment firm Superstruct Entertainment, acquired in October 2024 alongside KKR. Insight Partners, which retains a minority stake in DistroKid, also acquired German distributor Zebralution in January.
