South African vocalist J’Something has released the official music video for his reinterpretation of Johnny Clegg’s anti-apartheid anthem “Asimbonanga.” The visual arrived on 19 June 2026, following the single’s release on 24 April via the Scatterlings imprint, and serves as the first offering from a forthcoming tribute album.
Reimagining a Protest Landmark
The video brings a contemporary visual language to a song that became a global symbol of resistance, unity, and hope during South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. Originally performed by Johnny Clegg and Savuka, “Asimbonanga” called for the recognition of Nelson Mandela at a time when his name was banned in the country. J’Something’s version preserves the original’s emotional and political weight while introducing its message to younger audiences.
Scatterlings: A Curated Tribute
The Scatterlings album is curated by Jesse Clegg, Johnny Clegg’s son, in collaboration with singer-songwriter Msaki. The project reimagines songs that shaped South African musical identity, with each reinterpretation aiming to honour the spirit of the original while allowing for artistic evolution. The album features a diverse lineup of South African artists, including:
- Zakes Bantwini (Grammy award-winner)
- Sun-El Musician
- Simmy
- Jesse Clegg
- Msaki
The collaborative approach spans house, soul, electronic, and traditional influences, reflecting the breadth of the country’s contemporary music scene.
