Stichting Slachthuis, the organisation operating Haarlem’s Slachthuis music venue, has been declared bankrupt. Its venue and bar are closed, leaving the future of its live music operation uncertain.

Rehearsal and education facilities remain in use under a temporary arrangement with Patronaat and Hart.

Recovery efforts fail

The venue said months of work on a recovery plan had failed to produce a viable solution. Its supervisory board then filed for bankruptcy after efforts to establish a sustainable financial footing proved unsuccessful.

The organisation had faced financial difficulties for some time, with debts estimated at around €780,000. These included a substantial sum in unpaid rent owed to the municipality of Haarlem.

The municipality had provided an annual subsidy of €250,000 and previously committed funding through 2030.

It declined to offer further support because it concluded that the recovery proposal did not provide sufficient prospects for a financially sustainable operation over the long term.

Concert programme curtailed

Earlier this year, Slachthuis said it would cease organising most of its own concerts because of weak ticket sales and increasing operating costs. Several shows were subsequently cancelled or moved to other venues.

Slachthuis opened in its current form in 2022, occupying Haarlem’s former municipal slaughterhouse complex, which dates to 1907.

The project was developed with Haarlem venue Patronaat and arts organisation Hart as part of a €4.3 million municipal redevelopment of the site.

The music centre brought together:

  • A live music venue and café
  • Rehearsal rooms and recording facilities
  • Music education

The performance and café area had a maximum permitted capacity of around 150 people. The centre primarily served Haarlem’s local music scene as a small venue for grassroots and emerging artists.

Temporary operation of remaining facilities

After the bankruptcy, the curator initially permitted Slachthuis to stay open with significantly reduced operations while its future was assessed. The venue and bar are now closed.

Patronaat and Hart have taken over the rehearsal and education facilities temporarily for at least six months.

The arrangement does not constitute a restart of Stichting Slachthuis. Discussions about the venue’s longer-term future remain ongoing.
