Spotify has introduced Playlist Notes, a new tool for adding written thoughts and context inside playlists, and Editor Profiles that highlight the people behind the platform’s editorial playlists.

The feature originated from an internal concept called User Notes. Spotify‘s global editorial team will use Playlist Notes to explain why a track matters, its cultural relevance, or why it fits a specific playlist.

Editor rollout and availability

Editor-created Playlist Notes and Editor Profiles are rolling out to Free and Premium users ages 16 and older in six markets: the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

At launch, notes appear in six playlists:

  • Today’s Top Hits
  • RapCaviar
  • Hot Country
  • All New Pop
  • mint
  • Fresh Finds Hip-Hop

Listeners can tap Notes at the top of participating playlists. Tapping an editor’s name next to a note or at the top of a playlist opens that editor’s profile, which includes top tracks, albums, and playlists they contribute to.

Notes also appear in Now Playing, even when a song is playing outside the playlist where the note originated.

User-created notes

On mobile, users can add their own notes to tracks, podcast episodes, and audiobooks they have added to playlists. These notes can capture a memory, share a recommendation, or explain why a pick made the cut.

Anyone who can view a playlist can see its notes, and a user’s name links to their profile. All Playlist Notes must follow Spotify’s Platform Rules and Terms of Use.

User-curated Playlist Notes are rolling out on iOS and Android in more than 100 markets globally. Availability may differ from editor-created Playlist Notes.
