Spotify has launched Running Mode, a feature for Premium subscribers that builds running playlists around workout type, genre, tempo, and written prompts. The feature is intended to match music to a runner’s goals, mood, and motivation.
How Running Mode Works
Running Mode is located in Spotify’s Fitness hub. Users can start with one of 25 presets across workout types and genres, or choose a quick 20-minute Just Run session for a simple start.
Session length can be set from 10 to 90 minutes. Genre options include:
- pop
- EDM (electronic dance music)
- country
- hip-hop
Prompts and Discovery Settings
Users can stay close to familiar music or shift the discovery setting toward “Mostly new music” to hear fresh tracks.
Selecting “View prompt” opens the request behind the playlist. The feature, powered by Prompted Playlist, accepts custom text to guide song selection.
Example prompts include “Bring back songs I used to love but haven’t played this year” and “All songs should be under three minutes.”
Running Mode playlists update daily. Users can save a mix they like to revisit later.
Beat Matching and Audio Cues
For pace-focused sessions, Beat Matching lets users select a target BPM (beats per minute). The most popular setting is 160 BPM, while many runners choose 170 to 180 BPM for a faster cadence.
Turning on “Adjust song speed to match BPM” creates a consistent rhythmic flow. Leaving it off preserves each track’s original tempo.
Optional English audio cues provide guidance through structured sessions. Coaching can be turned on for encouragement or off to keep the focus on music.
Availability
Running Mode is available to Premium subscribers on Android in select markets. Premium users on iOS and Android in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden can find the feature in Spotify’s Fitness hub.
