Spotify will begin applying an AI Persona badge to artist profiles that represent entirely AI-generated characters, the company announced. The label, which uploaders can also self-designate, will by default remove those profiles from editorial and algorithmic recommendations.
How the badge is applied
Uploaders can manually add the AI Persona badge to profiles that represent an AI-generated character rather than a human artist. Spotify will also apply the badge to profiles it determines are AI-generated, even if the uploader does not self-disclose. The company said it will initially scrutinize profiles that have a certain-sized audience.
The designation will begin appearing in mid-September. Uploaders will have the option to appeal Spotify’s decisions.
Recommendations and user controls
Profiles carrying the AI Persona badge will be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. However, if a user follows a profile with the badge, that artist can still appear in recommendations for that user.
Users can tap the badge to see whether it was self-disclosed by the uploader or applied by Spotify. They can also report accounts they suspect are AI-generated.
“Although there’s a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination,” the company said. “This badge is about the artist’s public identity, not about how the music was made.”
