A coalition of 22 international and Australian rightsholder organisations has urged the Australian Government to reject a proposed framework that would allow AI developers to train on creative works through an “AI Training Permit” and a public benefit fund.
In a letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and senior ministers, the group said the scheme would operate as a text-and-data-mining exception under another name, weakening copyright protections and putting Australia out of step with international standards.
The letter was submitted ahead of the Prime Minister’s AI policy address scheduled for 14 July.
