Universal Music Group and Warner Chappell Music have launched Sonido Distrito Sur (SDS), an Ecuadorian music company led by singer-songwriter Juan Fernando Velasco.
The venture pairs UMG’s recorded music operations with Warner Music Group‘s publishing arm. Its scope includes investment, production, distribution, marketing, promotion, A&R (artists and repertoire), international collaborations, and new growth opportunities for Ecuadorian artists.
SDS aims to connect artists with markets in Peru, Colombia, and Central America. The company also plans to develop booking operations through a future international partnership.
Velasco, who is also president of the Ecuadorian authors’ and composers’ society SAYCE, will lead the company alongside music executive Ricardo Ordóñez.
Both UMG and Warner Music Group have been expanding their Latin American operations with key appointments in the region.
“Ecuador has never lacked talent. What has been missing is a structure capable of connecting that talent with opportunities in the international music industry. Sonido Distrito Sur was created to build that bridge and help our artists gain the recognition they truly deserve.”
