Spotify is increasing address checks for its Family and Duo plans, targeting members who do not live together. Users who fail verification or leave it unanswered face losing their discounted subscription.

Members must pass the location check to retain access. Those who fail it or do not respond to the notification within seven days face two consequences:

  • Removal from their discounted plan.
  • A 12-month restriction on joining another Family or Duo plan.

The increased enforcement comes as Goldman Sachs analysts suggest that a substantial share of Spotify’s subscribers may be unrelated people splitting Family plans to reduce costs, rather than members of the same household.

Enforcing the household requirement could lead some affected members to take individual subscriptions at full price, potentially increasing Spotify’s revenue as the company seeks to improve margins.
