Canada Announces Increased Investment in Music Sector

The Canadian government and a private partnership have both announced new funding initiatives aimed at supporting the country’s music industry.

Federal Funding and Streaming Revenue

The Canadian government announced a $600 million investment for the country’s audio and audiovisual sectors. This action occurred alongside a directive to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to re-examine its recent ruling regarding streaming services. The previous ruling required large streaming services to contribute 15% of their Canadian revenue to Canadian content initiatives.

The government’s investment is intended to replace potential funding from the streaming services with direct public funding. Organizations expected to continue receiving support under the new framework include FACTOR, Musicaction, the Canadian Starmaker Fund, Fonds RadioStar, the Community Radio Fund of Canada, and the Indigenous Music Office.

Venue Support Program Launched

In a separate initiative, Interac and a music publication announced a venue-support program connected to the NXNE festival. One participating NXNE venue will receive a $10,000 marketing package based on Interac debit transaction activity during the festival.

The program aims to highlight and support small businesses within Canada’s live music ecosystem, assisting a venue in attracting new audiences and fostering growth.

The initiatives acknowledge the need for investment in music infrastructure beyond artist support. Funding conversations have historically focused on creators and recordings, but healthy ecosystems also require venues, festivals, promoters, broadcasters, community organizations, and discovery platforms.

The federal government’s $600 million commitment is focused on national cultural funding, while the Interac-NXNE program targets grassroots businesses at the local level.

Program Participation Details

Venues can participate in the Interac-NXNE program by completing an application form and submitting a report detailing the total number of Interac Debit transactions processed during the festival, which runs from June 10-14, 2026. Reports must be submitted by 12 pm on June 15, 2026, and all data must be anonymized.

The winning venue will be selected based on the number of Interac Debit transactions processed during the festival, not the transaction value. Further details are available through a specific online resource.
