YouTube has launched Music Nights, a new series of exclusive live concerts, as competition with Spotify over live-music streaming intensifies.
The announcement follows Spotify’s recent release of a concert film with K-pop group Le Sserafim and reports that it is pursuing livestreaming rights for music festivals. Spotify has already established a model of hosting intimate gigs for superfans and distributing films of those events.
YouTube described Music Nights as “a series of exclusive live concerts designed for dedicated fans,” encompassing album release parties, intimate shows and special tour stops. The series will take place in major cities including Los Angeles, New York, Paris, London and Tokyo, as well as what YouTube called “unique destinations with a special meaning to artists like New Braunfels, Texas and Asbury Park, New Jersey.”
The first two performances have already been filmed and published on the artists’ official YouTube channels: Kacey Musgraves in New Braunfels and Bleachers in Asbury Park.
