Zakes Bantwini Reimagines Johnny Clegg’s ‘The Crossing’

Zakes Bantwini has released a new interpretation of Johnny Clegg’s ‘The Crossing (Osiyeza)’ as part of the Scatterlings project, featuring Jesse Clegg, Msaki, Skye Wanda, and the late Clegg’s original vocal.

Zakes Bantwini has released a new version of Johnny Clegg’s “The Crossing (Osiyeza)” as part of the Scatterlings project, which reinterprets Clegg’s catalogue. The track features Jesse Clegg, Msaki, Skye Wanda, and the late Johnny Clegg’s original recorded vocal.

The production applies an Afro-electronic and Afro House framework to the original song, which addresses themes of passage, remembrance, and hope. Jesse Clegg, Msaki, and Skye Wanda contribute additional vocal performances alongside the archival voice of Johnny Clegg.

Zakes Bantwini, a South African singer, producer, and songwriter, is often referred to as the King of Dance. He is known for blending dance music with African and global electronic influences. His single “Osama” topped Radio Monitor SA for 14 consecutive weeks and won South African Music Awards for Highest Airplay and Best Collaboration. He also released the album Ghetto King.
