Eurovision at 70: A Look at the Contest’s Impact
As the Eurovision Song Contest approaches its 70th anniversary, data indicates significant listener engagement with the event’s music and performers.
Over the past year, European listeners created over 1.2 million playlists inspired by the competition and streamed entries more than 1.5 billion times.
The 2025 contest events are scheduled to take place throughout May in Vienna, the home city of the 2025 winner, JJ, with the final competition on Saturday, May 16.
“Arcade” by Dutch artist Duncan Laurence is the most-streamed Eurovision song globally, with over 1.5 billion streams. “SNAP” by Rosa Linn of Armenia is second, having achieved over a billion streams despite finishing 20th in its competition year.
NAPA’s “Deslocado,” representing Portugal in 2025, achieved the highest stream count from that year’s contest after gaining popularity on social media, despite placing 21st.
The contest has been a launching pad for several prominent musical acts. ABBA, who represented Sweden in 1974, has accumulated over 12.5 billion streams worldwide.
Streaming data also reveals age-related preferences. Listeners in Generation Z frequently stream Alexander Rybak’s “Fairytale,” NAPA’s “Descolado,” and Joker Out’s “Carpe Diem.”
Older listeners show a preference for Duncan Laurence’s “Arcade,” Rosa Linn’s “SNAP,” and Loreen’s “Tattoo.”
Analysis of all winning entries to date suggests a common tempo of 127 beats per minute, balancing energy and emotional impact. The key of F major, combined with a 4/4 time signature, also appears frequently.
Ireland’s 1987 winner, “Hold Me Now” by Johnny Logan, most closely aligns with these characteristics, featuring a tempo of 126 BPM.
