The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has reduced the number of performing artists in recent years while simultaneously increasing ticket costs.

Coachella Lineup Size Decreases as Ticket Prices Rise

Over the past five editions, the Coachella festival has undergone changes in its programming, including a reduction in the number of artists performing.

The festival remains unique in consistently selling out two weekends with the same lineup, a feat other festivals like Primavera Sound in Barcelona and Ultra Miami have attempted without success. Events such as Austin City Limits and Tomorrowland do adjust artist schedules between weekends.

In 2024, Coachella experienced slower ticket sales than in previous years. Following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic – impacting a planned 2020 reunion of Rage Against The Machine – the festival began adjusting its approach.

The number of artists booked for the initial lineup has decreased. In 2022, the lineup included 179 artists, compared to 169 in 2018 and 166 in 2019. The 2026 festival features 139 artists, a reduction of 40.

The daily breakdown reflects this trend. The 2022 festival featured 60 artists on Friday, 61 on Saturday, and 57 on Sunday, plus one artist in a fourth, unassigned headliner slot. The 2026 schedule lists 51 artists for Friday, 44 for Saturday, and 43 for Sunday.

The number of artists on the final set times has also declined. In 2022, the festival included 196 and 197 artists across the two weekends. The 2026 schedule lists 151 and 158 artists, respectively.

Alongside these changes, ticket prices have risen. General admission passes started at $449 in 2022 and increased to $549 in 2026. The festival grounds have also expanded, potentially increasing overall capacity.

Analysis of artist performance data indicates potential benefits from the reduced lineup. Tracking Spotify monthly listeners from April 9 to April 13, the duo Prospa saw a gain of 210.6k listeners, ranking #14, with minimal overlap in performance times. KATSEYE, ranked #1, gained 959.1k listeners, benefiting from scheduling that minimized competition with similar artists.

Artists have also experienced increases in social media followers. KATSEYE’s Instagram followers increased by 40.2k, while Jack White, with a larger existing following, saw a gain of 20.6k followers, including a single-day increase of over 10k.

A study of artist metrics after both weekends of 2024 compared to 2023 showed slower Instagram and Spotify gains, but larger gains in Chartmetric score, a metric aggregating various measures of success. With even fewer artists scheduled for 2026 and sold-out attendance, artists may see benefits across all metrics. Resale tickets for the 2026 event cleared $2,700.

Increased touring costs are likely contributing to a greater investment per artist by the festival.
