A new study from data firm Luminate finds that 38% of Americans are less interested in listening to music produced using generative AI (GenAI), while 28% are more interested.

The survey, which polled 1,758 U.S. respondents already aware of GenAI technologies, asked how knowing content was AI-generated would affect their engagement across multiple entertainment categories. For music specifically, the breakdown of responses was:

  • 26% much less interested
  • 12% slightly less interested
  • 33% neither more nor less interested
  • 17% slightly more interested
  • 11% much more interested

Similar patterns emerged for podcasts, audiobooks, films, TV shows, and social media images and video. Respondents were somewhat more relaxed about AI involvement in games.

Age proved a significant factor. The youngest cohort surveyed, 13- to 17-year-olds, showed a net positive reaction of 19% toward AI-produced music. In contrast, 18- to 24-year-olds registered a net negative reaction of -29%, while 25- to 34-year-olds and 35- to 44-year-olds each came in at -3%.

“At a minimum, this suggests it would be a mistake to regard Gen Z as a monolith in its attitudes toward AI content,” Luminate noted.
