Tournament streaming surges

Four of Shakira’s tracks tied to the world’s biggest football event have seen dramatic increases in streams since the competition kicked off last month, according to Spotify data.

  • “Hips Don’t Lie” (2006): streams up 61.6% during the contest. Shakira performed the song at the 2006 final in Berlin.
  • “Waka Waka” (2010): streams jumped 246% the day after the tournament began, and have remained up more than 128% since.
  • “La La La” (2014): streams up 124.2%. The music video featured Lionel Messi and Neymar.
  • “Dai Dai” (2025): a collaboration with Burna Boy, streams up 136%. The Afrobeats-influenced track includes lyrics in five languages and references to Pelé, David Beckham, Mohamed Salah, Andrés Iniesta, and Carlos Valderrama. The video features Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, and Christian Pulisic.

Listener growth and demographics

Shakira’s football-themed music is reaching new audiences. Over the past three months, 15% of “Waka Waka” listeners had not previously streamed her music. One in seven current streamers of the song are first-time Shakira listeners, and more than a quarter are under 25 years old.

Overall, her catalog streams have risen 21.6% during the tournament. The surge has helped her become the first female Latin artist to exceed 100 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
