Snapchat has launched a real-time music-sharing feature on its Snap Map, powered by a new integration with Spotify.
The tool, called Now Playing, lets users broadcast what they are listening to directly on the map, which is used by 450 million people each month. Friends can see each other’s current tracks, opening a social discovery channel within the app.
Snapchatters link their Spotify account through entry points on the Map, Sounds, friend profiles, or in Settings. Once connected, they can choose who sees their listening activity, discover new songs through their contacts, and save tracks to Spotify from Snap Map, Spotlight, and Sound Pages.
Now Playing is available wherever both Snapchat and Spotify operate, with a launch in Canada expected soon.
“Music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, and it becomes even more meaningful when it brings friends closer,” said Manny Adler, Snapchat’s Head of Music. “Now Playing adds a new layer of expression and discovery to Snap Map, helping Snapchatters share the soundtrack to their day and find new music through the people they already know.”
