More than 148 million listeners outside historically Francophone markets regularly tuned into French-language content on Spotify in 2025, according to new platform data, underscoring the global reach of Francophone music, podcasts, and audiobooks. “One in six users worldwide listens to French-language content on Spotify without living in a French-speaking country,” said Antoine Monin, Spotify’s Managing Director for France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. “This isn’t just a trend; it’s an unprecedented movement.”

Music anchors the global Francophone wave

French-language tracks continue to travel far beyond their home markets. Artists such as Stromae, Indila, GIMS, Aya Nakamura, and Patrick Watson appear on playlists worldwide, while a new generation including TRIANGLE DES BERMUDES, Danilo, and R2 is pushing French music in new directions.

In France itself, local artists accounted for the majority of tracks in the Daily Top 50 France in 2025, reflecting both a deep domestic market and ongoing musical evolution.

Podcasts and audiobooks cross linguistic borders

French-language podcasts such as LEGEND, L’After Foot, L’Heure du Monde, InnerFrench, and Easy French are drawing listeners across borders. Meanwhile, French-language audiobooks accumulated hundreds of thousands of listening hours outside Francophone markets in 2025, with titles ranging from the classic Le Petit Prince to contemporary works.

Emerging markets and Francophone Africa fuel growth

The largest non-Francophone markets for French-language music remain Germany, the U.S., the Netherlands, the U.K., and Spain. However, some of the strongest growth is now coming from emerging markets, including India, Egypt, and Indonesia, where listening has surged dramatically in recent years.

Francophone Africa is also central to this expansion. Artists from cities like Abidjan and Bamako continue to shape the global export of French music. Top-streamed acts such as Magic System, Himra, and Tiken Jah Fakoly blend local traditions with contemporary sounds that resonate far beyond their home countries.

Quebec and Canada show deep engagement

In Quebec, nearly half of listeners regularly stream music, podcasts, or audiobooks in French. Across Canada, francophone content was discovered more than 720 million times on Spotify in 2025.
