Bravado, the merchandise division of Universal Music Group, has recycled more than 400,000 unsold tour t-shirts into new cotton blanks, a step that could curb waste across the live music sector. Social Distortion is the first act to sell merchandise printed on the upcycled fabric during its current European tour.
From Warehouse to Yarn
The company shipped obsolete inventory to textile recycler Hallotex in Morocco, where the garments were mechanically broken down and spun into fresh yarn over six weeks. The process yielded an estimated 280,000 new t-shirts and hoodies made entirely from recycled cotton, ready for artists to customize and sell on the road.
Environmental Footprint
Tour merchandise has often been overlooked in sustainability conversations that focus on transportation, energy, and plastics. Yet cotton farming and textile production consume significant water and energy, and unsold apparel frequently ends up in landfills. Upcycling leftover stock into new blanks offers a circular model that addresses both material waste and the financial losses artists incur when inventory goes unsold.
Artist-Driven Innovation
The project was catalyzed in part by environmental activist Maggie Baird, mother of Billie Eilish, working alongside Universal Music Group’s sustainability team. Billie Eilish’s tours have set a high standard for eco-conscious practices, featuring on-site Eco-Action Villages where fans engage with climate and food justice organizations, and promoting reusable water bottles, plant-based food options, and reduced single-use plastics.
Bravado noted that techniques developed with environmentally focused artists including Billie Eilish and FINNEAS have already influenced merchandise programs for Paul McCartney, Lorde, and Shawn Mendes. The company has also tested other circular-economy initiatives that transform old inventory into new products rather than discarding it.
