Defqon.1 Festival Cancelled as Netherlands Issues First-Ever Code Red Heat Warning

Organisers of Defqon.1, the world’s largest hard dance festival, cancelled the remaining days of the 2026 event after Dutch authorities issued an unprecedented code red weather warning for extreme heat.

The Defqon.1 hard dance festival in Biddinghuizen, Netherlands, was cancelled on its second day after the country’s meteorological institute issued an unprecedented code red extreme heat warning. Organisers confirmed late on 25 June that the four-day event, which began that day and was scheduled to run through 28 June, would not continue.

“We are absolutely devastated by this development,” the festival said in a statement on Instagram, calling the news “a blow felt on every level.”

Code Red Warning

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued the 24-hour code red alert, the first of its kind for the country, as temperatures soared across the region. The warning prompted local authorities to recommend that the festival significantly reduce the number of visitors on site.

Less than 24 hours before the full cancellation, Defqon.1 had already restricted access to weekend ticket holders only, turning away day-pass holders for Friday and Saturday. The decision to cancel the entire event followed shortly after.

On-Site Arrangements

Tens of thousands of attendees were already staying on the festival’s camping grounds when the cancellation was announced. Organisers said the camping grounds and a portion of the festival grounds would remain open on 26 June without music, providing essential facilities while people arranged their departures.

“This gives you the time to make arrangements for your journey home on Friday, June 26th. We’ll be there every step of the way,” the statement read.

Refunds and Compensation

All festival tickets will be refunded, and organisers said details on additional compensation would be shared after the weekend. The statement concluded: “This is not the journey we imagined, and the reality has barely sunk in. Nevertheless, it is our duty to take care of you. That is our sacred oath. Forever One Tribe.”

Line-Up and Venue

More than 350 hardstyle and hard dance artists were booked for Defqon.1 2026, including Brennan Heart, Showtek, Sub Zero Project, Angerfist, Hysta, Anime, and Miss K8. The festival takes place annually at the Walibi Holland theme park grounds.

Heatwave Across Western Europe

Western Europe is experiencing what meteorologists describe as its most severe and widespread heatwave on record. The United Kingdom recorded its hottest June day ever, while French authorities introduced a ban on public alcohol consumption during the heatwave, affecting events including the nationwide Fête de la Musique street festival and several sporting fixtures.
