Pete Townshend and Primary Wave Music Establish Partnership

Pete Townshend has entered into an agreement with Primary Wave Music regarding his name, image, likeness and future creative endeavors.

Pete Townshend Partners with Primary Wave Music

Pete Townshend, guitarist for The Who, has formed a partnership with Primary Wave Music. The agreement encompasses the use of Townshend’s name, image and likeness, as well as the development and utilization of his future creative projects.

Reports indicate the arrangement also involves the acquisition of certain music rights. A representative from Spirit Music, which previously acquired Townshend’s publishing rights in 2017 for a reported $100 million, has stated they no longer possess those rights.

Sources confirm that compositions including “My Generation,” “Baba O’Riley,” “Behind Blue Eyes,” “Pinball Wizard,” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” are part of the Primary Wave agreement. As Variety noted, Eel Pie Recording Productions holds the recorded-music rights to the majority of Townshend’s solo work, and it is presumed some of these rights are also included. This is a significant development in the world of music industry reports and rights management.

The financial terms of the partnership have not been made public.

Primary Wave Music states that its licensing and synchronization department is currently working to include Townshend’s songs in film and television projects. Townshend will also have access to the company’s digital team to build his online presence. Understanding how artists can leverage digital tools is increasingly important, as seen in Introducing InterSpace SmartLinks.

Larry Mestel, CEO & Founder of Primary Wave Music, stated: “Pete Townshend is one of the greatest and most influential rock icons in music history. We are honored that he has chosen Primary Wave as a partner and collaborator and look forward to creating new opportunities together.”

The deal highlights the growing importance of partnerships within the music industry for artist development and revenue generation.
