A program dedicated to catalog music’s continuing cultural impact launched in 2024 with lists recognizing classic Hip-Hop and R&B albums and songs. The program has now turned to pop music, beginning with a list of 30 albums considered ‘Classic Pop Albums of the Streaming Era.’
Streaming has fundamentally altered pop music, solidifying it as a distinct genre with its own characteristics. Artists now have increased creative control and can connect with audiences independently of traditional commercial pressures, resulting in a more diverse and expansive sound. A team of editors—Cecilia Winter (Editorial Lead, Global Hits), Talia Kraines (Editorial Lead, Pop), JJ Italiano (Head of Global Music Curation & Discovery, Editorial), and Carl Chery (Creative Director, Head of Urban Music)—identified the albums based on overall quality, execution, and cultural resonance, rather than stream counts or popularity.
