Zola 7, born Bonginkosi Dlamini, will release a new single, “She Nailed It (Amazipho)”, on 31 July, as the South African music icon reaffirms his belief that genuine artists never step away from their craft.

A Tribute to Resilient Women

Produced by Almotie Mtombeni, known professionally as Alie Keys, the track celebrates strong, determined women. Zola said the song was inspired by the powerful women in his personal and professional life, from those who manage his company to those who support him at home.

“They continue to inspire me through their dedication and resilience,” he said.

Artistic Longevity and Generational Voices

At 49, Zola dismissed the idea that veteran musicians should step aside for younger talent.

“There is no such thing as retirement for a true artist,” he stated, arguing that creativity grows with experience.

He cited the timeless music of Stimela, noting that audiences still listen to the band’s songs as if they were released yesterday.

“It’s not like I’m a boxer,” he joked, drawing a contrast with physically demanding careers.

He also rejected claims that today’s musicians lack social consciousness. Each generation, he said, tells its own story shaped by its own realities, and authenticity is more important than imitation.

Adapting to a Changing Industry

Zola, who rose to prominence in the early 2000s with platinum-selling albums and the hit SABC1 programme Zola 7, emphasised the need for artists to evolve. He used the struggles of the South African Post Office as a cautionary example of what happens when one fails to adapt. While he welcomes digital progress, he expressed concern about artificial intelligence’s potential impact on human creativity.

He credited his extensive travels across Africa with broadening his understanding of people and culture, and said he views past setbacks as opportunities for growth. That mindset, he believes, has helped him remain relevant for more than two decades.

The single “She Nailed It (Amazipho)” is set for release on 31 July.
