Bandsintown’s 2025 High Notes data identifies the 10 independent US music venues with the strongest follower growth on its platform, offering a measure of audience interest as live music faces economic pressures.

The venues continued their growth trajectory through 2026. Live music has gained cultural momentum across the US, although financial difficulties persist across the industry.

Support for independent stages

Bandsintown’s ongoing partnership with the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) includes the joint Live Independent initiative.

The initiative offers independent venue search, featured placements and certified badges to help audiences find and support independent stages.

Jazz, dance and neighborhood clubs

  • Preservation Hall, on St. Peter Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter, stages intimate acoustic performances by local musicians preserving the city’s traditional jazz heritage. Its origins lie in sessions held in an art gallery. The family-run venue brings together performers and listeners across generations.
  • Smartbar is an independent basement nightclub on Chicago’s North Clark Street, with programming focused on dance music and DJs from around the world. Visiting performers share the calendar with resident artists. Its recurring events include Queen!, a longstanding party connected to Chicago house music and LGBTQ+ nightlife.
  • Spybar opened in 1996 on Chicago’s North Franklin Street. The basement electronic music club books internationally recognized DJs and producers, emerging performers, resident artists and regional talent. Its compact space incorporates a lounge and a dance floor serving house and techno audiences.
  • Barboza occupies the lower level of the Neumos complex in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. It opened in 2012 to accommodate local bands, using the former mechanical shop of an automobile dealership. The intimate room sits below street level within a building tied to the neighborhood’s industrial past.
  • Icehouse opened in 2012 on Minneapolis’ Eat Street. The live music club serves food and drinks alongside a program of concerts, comedy and dancing. Artist residencies and individual performances provide recurring occasions for local musicians and audiences to meet.

Renovated clubs and multipurpose spaces

  • The Barbary, a two-floor nightclub in Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood, has connections to the city’s blues, punk and indie nightlife scenes. It reopened in February 2025 after a major renovation that added improved sound and lighting and an outdoor patio. Its schedule mixes established dance parties with underground house and techno.
  • Brillobox has operated on Pittsburgh’s Penn Avenue since 2005 as a bar and cultural space. It serves food and drinks, while its second floor accommodates entertainment and community activities: DJ dance parties, art events, spoken word, fundraisers, variety shows and screenings.
  • The Virgil is a family-owned cocktail bar and entertainment venue at the edge of Los Angeles’ Silver Lake neighborhood. Live music, comedy, DJs and special events take place on its Stage Side. Its B Side hosts weekend DJ sets and dancing, with cocktails and a full beer selection also available.
  • The Shubert Theatre is a historic Broadway theater on West 44th Street in Manhattan’s Theater District. The Shubert Organization operates the venue, which stages theatrical productions in an ornate auditorium with decorative plasterwork and painted panels. It stands beside the Booth Theatre along Shubert Alley.
  • Spirit, in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood, combines a music venue, restaurant and event space across three levels. Live entertainment areas share the building with a pizzeria and rooftop garden bar, providing dining, drinks and gathering spaces alongside its shows.
