Iphakadelihle, a South African maskandi artist from Meyerton, has released a new seven-track EP titled Omahosha. The project uses contemporary Zulu storytelling to examine themes of love, economic hardship, community, and cultural identity.
The title translates to “The Sharp Ones,” a reference to the incisive narratives drawn from everyday township life. Across the EP, Iphakadelihle documents local experiences while remaining anchored in maskandi traditions.
Sound and Subject Matter
The recording pairs traditional maskandi instrumentation, including guitar, concertina, and isigekle, with modern influences intended to reach younger audiences. The seven songs address resilience, identity, social challenges, and collective life, with songwriting rooted in personal and communal township stories.
Iphakadelihle has built his musical identity around Zulu cultural narratives and daily realities, often centering on love, struggle, pride, and social connection. The EP continues that approach, balancing established maskandi foundations with present-day perspectives.
