IMPALA has published the second instalment of its Digital Forward report series, shifting focus from off-platform audience building to the mechanics of succeeding inside streaming services. The new report, Mastering On-Platform Strategies, is co-funded by the European Union and follows a webinar held on 28 January that brought together digital music practitioners from across the sector.

The first report in the series examined off-platform marketing: social media strategy, paid advertising, content creation, email list building, and audience development that takes place outside streaming environments. It detailed how independent labels can build direct fan relationships, capture data, and create engagement that grows over time, even within the constraints of current streaming economics.

This second report turns to the platforms themselves, analysing algorithms, geographic market differences, penetration rates, and the native tools available to labels and artists. It is designed to help independent music companies navigate the internal dynamics of streaming services more effectively.

Webinar informed the findings

The report draws on a webinar hosted by Sam Taylor, which featured practitioners from across the digital music ecosystem. The session explored practical on-platform tactics and served as a foundation for the report’s recommendations.

IMPALA’s role in the independent sector

IMPALA, the Independent Music Companies Association, was founded in 2000 and now represents more than 6,000 independent music companies across Europe. Small, micro, and medium-sized enterprises and self-releasing artists make up 99% of Europe’s music companies. These independents produce over 80% of all new releases and account for 80% of the sector’s jobs, according to IMPALA.

The association’s stated mission is to grow the independent music sector sustainably, return more value to artists, promote diversity and entrepreneurship, improve political access, and inspire change. IMPALA began a new EU co-funded work programme in 2025 and marks its 25th anniversary this year with a series of interviews and features highlighting the independent sector.
