Bassline Fest Marks 20 Years of ‘Say Africa’
Bassline Fest 2026 was held on May 23rd at People’s Park at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the festival’s ‘Say Africa’ theme in conjunction with Africa Day. The event featured both established and emerging artists from across the continent, with a focus on African music, storytelling, and cultural expression.
Performers included Vusi Mahlasela, Ami Faku, Maleh, Yugen Blakrok, and Brandon Aura, an emerging Afro-pop artist. The festival also showcased winners from the Rhythmic Clash talent competition, including Zinhle Madela.
The festival incorporated a cultural marketplace with local designers, wellness brands, food vendors, and an African craft market offering handmade goods from traders like Bokgoni’s Creations. The event drew families, music fans, and cultural practitioners.
Vusi Mahlasela’s performance included both established songs and new material from an upcoming album. He also performed a rendition of ‘Todii’ as a tribute to the late Zimbabwean musician Oliver Mtukudzi.
Brandon Aura spoke about performing for a large audience, and Mahlasela expressed his enjoyment of revisiting older songs and sharing new work.
The festival included a tribute to Maria McCloy, a publicist and cultural advocate who was a significant figure in the history of Bassline and Johannesburg’s live music scene.
This year’s event highlighted a combination of generations and musical styles, with contemporary sounds alongside folk influences, politically focused lyrics, and live instrumentation. The audience represented a diverse range of backgrounds and shared appreciation for indigenous music and heritage.
Bassline Fest 2026 served as both an Africa Day celebration and a demonstration of music’s role in cultural preservation and social connection. The festival continues to be a cultural platform in South Africa after two decades of the ‘Say Africa’ theme.
