Afro-soul singer Mduduzi Ncube has launched an independent career following his departure from Inkabi Records, releasing the single “Amamitha” as a statement of self-reliance and ambition.
Ncube, 31, from Hammarsdale outside Durban, confirmed the split earlier this year. While reports suggested financial disputes, the label characterised the separation as amicable. Artist Big Zulu stated that Inkabi Records owed Ncube no money and that he left with the label’s full blessing. Ncube has declined to discuss the circumstances, choosing instead to direct his energy toward building an independent future.
“The journey has not been easy,” Ncube said of life as an independent artist, citing the added responsibilities of production, promotion and business management. He has invested in building his own recording studio, a move he says grants him greater creative control and the freedom to shape his sound on his own terms.
The new single, “Amamitha,” which translates to “millions,” carries a message of hope and determination. Ncube described the track as a source of comfort following the emotional experience of leaving the label. He said he views the situation not as a setback but as motivation to work harder, and he hopes the song will encourage listeners to stay focused on their dreams despite obstacles.
From Persistence to Breakthrough
Ncube’s entry into the music industry was built on persistence. In 2019, he repeatedly visited the studios of Afrotainment, guitar in hand, performing outside in the hope of being noticed. His patience paid off when DJ Tira recognised his talent and gave him an opportunity to showcase his abilities.
That breakthrough led to a deal with Inkabi Records, where Ncube released tracks including “Langa Linye” and “Istimela,” earning a reputation for emotive, storytelling-driven Afro-soul that explores love, relationships and everyday life.
Mentorship and Next Steps
Now operating independently, Ncube says the support he once received has inspired him to help emerging artists. Since opening his studio, he has received numerous messages from aspiring musicians seeking guidance. While he is still establishing his own business, he has expressed a strong desire to mentor young talent and create opportunities for others.
Ncube also acknowledged the personal support of his partner, Sinethemba Ngcobo, crediting her with helping him stay focused during the transition. He has begun sharing booking details on social media, signalling his commitment to expanding his reach as an independent artist.
With the release of “Amamitha,” Ncube aims to inspire resilience and hard work while building a career on his own terms.
