Universal Music Group (UMG) has become the first major music company to sign a licensing agreement with TYGER, a gaming music service that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to adjust songs in response to gameplay. The agreement covers portions of UMG’s recording and publishing catalogs across TYGER’s free and paid tiers.

Music that responds to gameplay

TYGER lets users play music alongside games including Fortnite and Roblox, with its proprietary AI technology adapting the music to events in the game.

  • The service works on PC, console and mobile without requiring studio integration.
  • Its existing library contains more than 400,000 songs, predominantly from independent artists.
  • TYGER is in beta and plans to launch later this year.

UMG and TYGER outline the agreement

Michael Nash, UMG’s executive vice president and chief digital officer, said:

“At UMG, we have a well-established track record of exploring and developing new creative and commercial opportunities that enable our artists, songwriters and labels to better connect with music fans. We believe that music has a more integral role to play in gaming and through this innovative new licensing agreement with TYGER, our artists and their music will now be able to soundtrack personalized gameplay experiences and connect with millions of gamers and fans around the world.”

Nick Venti, TYGER’s chief executive officer and co-founder, said:

“Gaming is where the next generation spends its time, discovers culture and connects with friends, but music has never had a native way to reach those audiences. This agreement with Universal Music Group is an important milestone for TYGER and validates our vision for the future of music in and around interactive and digital experiences.”
