Udio has released information regarding its forthcoming AI-powered music application, Starstruck, which will allow users to create derivative works from existing songs under license.

Udio Unveils Details Of Its AI Music App, Starstruck

The application enables users to remix, cover, and reimagine songs from a selection of artists.

Details about Udio’s licensed AI app, Starstruck, were presented during a private webinar hosted by Udio with Kobalt on April 30. A recording of the webinar was shared with Cherie Hu, Founder of Water & Music.

Udio CEO Andrew Sanchez demonstrated the app live, with Kobalt CEO Laurent Hubert and Chief Digital Officer Bob Bruderman also participating.

Udio reached a licensing agreement with Kobalt in April, and has also secured agreements with Universal, Warner, Merlin, and Believe.

The application allows fans to create new songs based on existing material, with rights holders receiving a royalty for each creation.

The “Cover” function reimagines a song as if performed by a different artist. An example provided was a cover of a Taylor Swift song in the style of Charli XCX.

The “Reimagine” function rewrites the music of a song while retaining the original lyrics.

The “Remix” function applies changes in genre or style to existing recordings.

The “Create” function allows users to write original lyrics and combine them with an artist’s vocal style, with restrictions in place regarding subject matter, language, and style.

The app will offer two subscription levels, Standard and Pro, each limiting the number of creations per month.

Ownership of any new song created within the application remains with the rights holders of the original artist, rather than the user who generated it.

According to remarks made during the webinar, songwriters will receive compensation exceeding that typically provided by traditional streaming services.

All songs created within the app will remain within the application itself and cannot be exported or distributed elsewhere.
